Daniel M. Thomas Collection

 
Daniel Martin Thomas Sr. (1918-2012) was an Lincoln Memorial University work-study student between 1936 to 1940. The following includes essays that Dr. Thomas created during his freshman year. He was heavily involved in sports.

Thomas was born in Powell Valley, TN and grew up in Cumberland Gap. Post graduation, he taught at the Powell Valley High School then in the fall of 1941 attended the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, being apart of the Phi Chi Fraternity. In 1942, he was assigned in the Army as an Aid Man for the Army Corps of Engineers in Canada. In 1945 he finished his schooling, and transferred to the Navy at Gallinger Hospital in Washington, D.C to be a medical officer. Shortly after he was married by the president on LMU in Harrogate on Octo. 4, 1946 to his wife Louise.

From 1947-1948, Thomas served his residency at Duke University. He moved to Oak Ridge and became a successful partner in practice, later called the "Children's Clinic". Thomas was called away during the Korean War. He and his family moved to California during this time. After the war, he returned to the practice. The family had 6 children.

In the 60s-70s, Thomas served as the team physician for the Clinton Dragon's football team. He also served as the chairman of the Anderson County Board of Education, as well as the chief of staff at Oak Ridge Hospital.

Dr. Thomas worked in his later years with the LMU Alumni Association, and was honored to be apart of the Athletes' Hall of Fame.
