Abstract
The presentation focuses on the importance of activating background knowledge and gaining student attention in the learning process. The presentation will cover: information, understanding, background knowledge, purpose, and attention as they relate to the learning cycle. It will provide an example of the learning cycle in action. The presentation will discuss activating background knowledge through the lens of analysis, the four-part processing model, Scarborough’s Reading Rope, and connecting to prior knowledge. Finally, the presentation will lay out four instructional routines for gaining student attention and discuss critical thinking.
